THE NICKEL BOYS revolves around two young men sentenced to a juvenile reformatory in 1960s Jim Crow Florida where they and the other residents are subject to the cruel abuse of the staff, both physically and sexually. One, Elwood Curtis, keeps the words of Martin Luther King Jr. in his mind and heart, trying to live Dr. King's assertion that even if they "throw us in jail...we will still love you." His friend Turner considers Elwood a naive fool, and considers scheming and keeping your head down as the only way of surviving their terrible situation. Based on a real Florida reformatory that abused children for over a hundred years, this is a powerful and moving account of innocence and experience by a National Book Award and Pulitzer Prize winning author at the peak of his skills.
