
Harper Lee is a native of Monroeville where she still spends about half the year. She was educated at Huntingdon College and the University of Alabama. She won the Alabama Library Association Author of the Year Award and the Pulitizer Prize for fiction.
To Kill a Mockingbird was voted Best Novel of the Century by Library Journal. It has been translated into almost every language on earth and has remained on best seller lists for forty years. The screenplay by Horton Foote won an Academy Award. A live presentation is performed for two weeks every year in Monroeville in conjunction with The Alabama Writers Symposium held the first weekend in May on the campus of Alabama Southern College. The Symposium presents The Harper Lee Lifetime Literary Award to a deserving Alabama writer.
